I am excited to announce our first in-person Unreal Writers meet-up!
Here are the details:
Time and Date
Saturday 28th March, 1-3pm.
Location
The Exchange, 3 Centenary Square, Birmingham, B1 2DR.
Accessibility & Access (from the University of Birmingham website)
The Exchange is committed to being an accessible and inclusive space. There is step-free access and accessible toilets on all floors, and a Changing Places toilet on the Basement level. Guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome.
You can find the nearest accessible parking via this link to the Birmingham City Council website: Find disabled parking (Blue badge parking) | Birmingham City Council.
Registration
A couple of technical requests - please let me know that you are planning on coming by emailing me at [email protected], and send me your Signal username (more about this below). I will then add you to an Unreal Writers Signal group where I can update you on practical matters, such as if the venue needs to change last minute, or where we are seated within The Exchange. The group can also function as a place to chat all things genre writing!
Signal
I wanted a way for us to communicate as a group quickly while keeping our mobile numbers private, and have landed on Signal for now (thanks to members for suggesting this). For those not familiar, Signal is a free, secure, open source, not-for-profit messaging app. Because of its username feature, you can add and be added to chats without needing to give away your mobile number to other users (you do need one to make an account, but this is hidden unless you change your privacy settings). Signal is available to download on Android and Apple stores and quick to set up. You can create a username within the Signal settings by tapping the Profile area that contains your initials and phone number (full breakdown on Signal usernames available here).
Theme
To be confirmed! If you have ideas, please send them my way via [email protected].
To bring
A pen and paper or writing device, and some money for a drink. We haven’t booked the venue, so we will be there as humble patrons.
New platform
Unreal Writers has moved from Substack to beehiiv for its newsletter distribution. Fear not—you don’t need to do anything extra to keep receiving mail. If you’re recommending Unreal Writers to a friend, they can subscribe here: https://unrealwriters.beehiiv.com. Let me know if you’d like to find out more about why we have moved.
That’s all for now! I’ll send out notes from the last meeting and any updates I have for you in the next newsletter.
Keep writing,
Jonah
